A suburban Chicago mayor is joining Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in calling for a permanent freeze on property taxes. Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau says he is committed to keeping property taxes low while maintaining services.
The recently elected mayor met with Rauner on Friday to urge state lawmakers to support the governor's push to freeze property taxes at current rates unless residents vote to raise them.
But other suburban Chicago mayors have firmly opposed the plan. Officials representing more than 150 cities and villages released an opinion piece in April saying a freeze would hurt local governments while doing nothing to address the state's budget problems.
Rauner says he won't support a budget plan proposed by Senate Democrats that includes income and sales tax increases without a permanent property tax freeze.
