Pekin's "welcome" sign includes its nickname, "The Marigold City."

The City of Pekin is getting ready to launch a text messaging system aimed at keeping residents informed and connected.

The TextMyGov service is scheduled to start July 7, giving citizens a tool to receive notifications from the city and access information.

In a media release, Pekin says it is “committed to improving service delivery through modern technology.”

Residents will get a message on behalf of the city from the number 9896; anyone can opt out of the service by replying “STOP.” People who don't receive the initial message can enroll by texting "PEKINALERTS" to that 91896 number.

Once enrolled, recipients will get alert texts providing notifications regarding city events, emergencies, road closures, and more.

In addition to the text alerts, Pekin will begin offering on-demand city information around the clock through the TextMyGov phone number at 309-473-8377. Residents will be able to find answers related to paying bills, accessing meeting agendas and minutes, and other information.
