Lawmakers Want Automatic Payments to State Workers Regardless of Budget

A group of Republican lawmakers want to set up automatic payments to state workers. It would ensure Illinois’ employees get paid regardless of whether there’s a budget.

This is after Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed a court challenge last week. That said if lawmakers don’t act, state employees would lose pay. It could also shut down the government.

State Representative Avery Bourne is one of 16 sponsors of the proposal. She says Madigan’s move to hang a shutdown over the heads of lawmakers is pure gamesmanship.

“The stability for state employees especially after the current court filing by the Attorney General is what’s really in the middle of the political game right now.”

Democrats have their own plan to avoid a shutdown. It’s a one-time measure to fund state agencies until July.
