Illinois Republicans Divided on Trump's Immigration Halt

Republican members of Congress from Illinois are divided on President Trump's executive order on refugees and immigrants. So far, three of Illinois' seven Congressional Republicans have issued statements saying they're OK with the president's order.

It temporarily halts immigration from several majority-Muslim countries and turns away all refugees.  Rep. Mike Bost, from southwestern Illinois, says that's "simple common sense" intended to make Americans safer.

The strongest Illinois Republican statement against the order has come from Randy Hultgren, from the Chicago suburbs. He says it's "overly broad,"  and that America should be welcoming refugees, "not turning them away at the door."

Democrats were quick to denounce Trump's order. At least two joined airport protests over the weekend.  Two Illinois Republicans we contacted have yet to take a position: suburban Representative Peter Roskam and Darin LaHood from Peoria.

Brian Mackey formerly reported on state government and politics for NPR Illinois and a dozen other public radio stations across the state. Before that, he was A&E editor at The State Journal-Register and Statehouse bureau chief for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
