Drink Spill Led to Fight Before Fatal Shooting

Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz says the fight that preceded the shooting Sunday near the University of Illinois campus appears to have begun after one woman spilled a drink on another at a party.  Police say the party was at an apartment in the Campustown area that runs through the middle of campus. The large party spilled out of the apartment.

Rietz said the drink spill led to a fight involving the women and then to a man being severely beaten by a large group of men. Police say the victim of the beating has since been released from the hospital.

The shooting that killed one man and injured three people happened a short time later.
