A former northern Illinois police officer has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a girl he knew for a decade. David Wright of Campton Hills pleaded guilty in the middle of his trial, about 20 minutes into the victim's testimony.
The 54-year-old former Elburn police officer was arrested in spring 2013 and charged with 33 felonies. He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal sexual assault.
Kane County judge D.J. Tegeler accepted the plea, saying "quite frankly, I think 500 years sounds reasonable." The judge also told Wright it was "reprehensible" for him to make the now 17-year-old girl testify. He told Wright that he has "not done anything but ruin her."
Prosecutors said Wright first sexually assaulted the girl when she was 7.
