Rauner “Proud” administration keeps government operating without budget

Illinois is just two weeks away from going an entire year without a budget.  Lawmakers also haven't passed one for next year. Both have been caught in a political fight - with Governor Bruce Rauner holding out on a tax hike until Democrats get on board with his controversial agenda.

Rauner is now sounding the alarm. He says government operations are in jeopardy unless at least a temporary budget is passed.  But he says he's "proud" his administration has kept things going this long without one.

"I have to say, I give our team and our administration tremendous credit for being able to run the government for 18 months with massive deficits and no budget. It's extraordinary performance by the leaders in our team. We're doing heroic things."

Rauner says construction projects will be halted without funding to pay for them, and that will drive up costs.  He says prisons are also threatened, there's no authorization to pay their water and electric bills.
