Normal looks to revive Route 66 landmark as tourist draw

illinoisroute66.org

A historic former gas station and Route 66 landmark in Normal could become a city-owned tourist attraction.   The City Council is scheduled to vote tonight on the purchase of the onetime Sprague's service station.  The 85-year-old building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a town landmark.

City Manager Mark Peterson says the town has been negotiating the purchase for the past year. The council will consider spending $229,000 to buy the property and $200,000 for building improvements.

The current owner purchased the property in 2006 in hopes of converting it into a bed and breakfast along with a gift shop and restaurant.
