Cemetery where Lincoln rests will be holiday gathering spot

findagrave.com

The cemetery where Abraham Lincoln is buried will take on a role it played in decades past this Memorial Day weekend.  Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder will welcome guests to the cemetery on May 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. for music, an ice cream social and a tour of significant trees at the site.

Cemeteries in times past served as places for community gatherings, public speeches, picnics and strolls. The historic Oak Ridge Abbey will be open for visitors. The structure with polished marble and stained-glass windows opened in 1910 for about 1,000 interments.

A tour highlighting significant trees will be provided by the Starhill Forest Arboretum. The Wildwood Strings, an ensemble of dulcimers, will provide music and there will be educational programs for children.
