CHICAGO (AP) - Prosecutors in Dennis Hastert's hush-money case are facing a deadline to submit a court document that will recommend a sentence for the former U.S. House Speaker.
The presentencing memo due Friday could also divulge fresh details about why Hastert sought to pay $3.5 million to keep someone quiet about past misconduct. He's pleaded guilty to breaking banking laws.
Prosecutors and a Chicago federal judge confirmed at a March hearing that allegations against Hastert relate to sexual abuse. They have otherwise offered scant explanation.
Sentencing is April 27.
Defense lawyers want probation for the 74-year-old Republican. They've cited his health and the shame he's suffered for why he should be spared prison.
Prosecutors will likely want some prison time. His plea deal suggests a sentence of no more than six months.
