Rauner to Students: Politics Isn't Pretty

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner had some dark things to say about politics when talking to students at a middle school Monday.

Rauner toured a North Shore middle school and took questions from students.

One question posed to him: Why do you think kids should get involved in government?

"Democracy is hard, you know? And this presidential election, oh my goodness. I’m appalled by the rhetoric and the - it’s appalling." Rauner said to his audience of students. "And it’s ugly and it’s nasty and it’s weird and I’m - some of the statements that get made, I’m just, I’m horrified."

Rauner didn’t say if he was referring to a specific candidate - or a particular party.

He only told reporters later that what he was talking about is - quote - “probably self-evident.”

One of the few things Rauner has said about the race is that he will support the Republican nominee.
