Democrats reject changing law to allow state takeover of CPS

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner says he’s trying to find a way for the state to take over Chicago Public Schools, even though that seemingly requires a change in the law.

Governor Rauner is asking the state Board of Education to look for a new superintendent of Chicago Public Schools, and a way to take over the school system.

Democrats reject changing the law to allow a state takeover.  So Rauner says he’s trying to find another way.

"Let’s review CPS, see if they’re qualified for state takeover. Every day matters for the school children of Chicago."

Karen Lewis is the head of the Chicago Teachers Union."Please don’t pay any attention to the ravings of a mad man ‘cause that’s what he is."

Both the union and CPS management can’t agree on a contract, but both sides do agree Rauner cannot take over the schools.
