Wife of cop who staged suicide 'devastated'

Attorneys for the wife of a northern Illinois police officer who killed himself after embezzling from a youth program is vehemently denying charges that she took part in the scheme.

Melodie Gliniewicz was indicted on felony counts of money laundering and disbursing charitable funds without authority for personal benefit.

51-year-old Gliniewicz is "devastated" by the indictment and says that she was a victim of her husband's "secret actions."

Her husband, Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, died Sept. 1. Authorities say he staged his suicide to look like a homicide because he feared discovery of the decades of embezzlement.

Authorities say MelodieGliniewicz served as an adviser to the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post her husband ran.

A spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff's Department says that investigators determined that the couple's adult son, D.J. Gliniewicz, received money from the account but did not have any idea where it came from and will not be charged with any financial crime.
