U of Illinois African-American center could get extra funds

The University of Illinois plans to use money left over from a construction project to help build a new African-American cultural center.

$15-million was left from an $83-million bond issue that financed the construction of Wassaja Hall and demolition of some older student housing.

School officials say the leftover money will be used for the planned Bruce Nesbitt African-American Cultural Center. The campus has already promised $4.9-million for the project.

The unused money would also be used to finance some smaller campus housing projects.  The full board still has to approve the project.
