Flood damage brings con artists

Residents who have experienced flooding are being warned to watch out for those trying to take advantage.  Damage to homes and businesses can leave individuals in a hurry to get their lives back to normal.   Unfortunately, con artists use that opportunity to scam people.

They're often called "storm chasers" and go door to door to offer services.  They use pressure tactics and wind up charging more for what is sometimes questionable work.

Among the tips for consumers: use established local contractors and ask for recommendations.  You can also check out a company through the Better Business Bureau and the state's Consumer Fraud Hotline.  Other advice... get written estimates, don't pay in cash and never make full payment until the work is complete.

The Attorney General says anyone who encounters suspicious activity should contact local police and her office.

Consumer Fraud Hotline numbers: 1-800-386-5438 (Chicago) / 1-800-243-0618 (Springfield) / 1-800-243-0607(Carbondale)
