Mayor Rahm Emanuel says a federal civil rights investigation into the Chicago Police Department's tactics would be "misguided."
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan requested an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division to determine whether the police department's practices violate federal and constitutional law.
She cited five high-profile cases, including the 2014 shooting death of black teenager Laquan McDonald by white police officer Jason Van Dyke. Federal officials are already investigating that case.
Emanuel says another overall probe, like the one requested by Madigan, would slow down the conclusion. He says he's awaiting the results of the ongoing federal investigation.
