Rauner rescinds rules that cut thousands off from subsidized care

Illinois Democrats are moving forward with attempts to override Governor Bruce Rauner's vetoes despite his offering what Republicans call an olive branch.

Rauner, a Republican, backtracked on several of his controversial moves in recent days. He no longer plans to drop home care for the disabled and elderly.  He rescinded rules that cut off thousands of low-income families in subsidized daycare.

House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie says while Rauner has changed his tone, Democrats still need to prevent Rauner from unilaterally making those cuts again.

"So I think that extreme actions may get extreme reactions, and I think that in this area, anybody who understands who child care operates, and the importance of child care for low-income working families, would have to agree that it doesn't make sense to slash the program the way the governor did."

Republicans say Rauner is trying to compromise.  They say Democrats are not cooperating. Illinois is in its fifth month of a partial government shutdown.
