Illinois’ budget impasse is getting the attention of more and more students at Northern Illinois University. Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner visits DeKalb tonight to speak to members of the County’s Economic Development Corporation.
Before he takes the stage, students, staff, and other community leaders will be in the center of campus calling for awareness of cuts to MAP grants, social services, and the halt in construction of the Stevens Building.
The event will also include a voter registration drive. Student Association Senate Speaker Dillon Domke says he hopes the rally will get more students engaged.
“A lot of times, students don’t necessarily know what’s going on in the state. Even more so, they don’t know how to have a voice or have a say in the matter.”
Domke says the rally isn’t aimed specifically at Republican Governor Bruce Rauner, and adds: “everyone has a responsibility for the fact that there is no budget.”
