'Tis the season to be on the lookout for deer while you're driving. The state department of transportation is issuing a warning.
Last year, there were more than 15,000 deer on car crashes in Illinois. The vast majority of them, all but 500, resulted in property damage. Four resulted in death according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
IDOT says about half of these accidents typically happen from now through December; mostly at twilight or night on rural roads.
And yet the state's seemingly least rural, most populated county, Cook, is tied with Madison County as the number one place for crashes involving deer.
IDOT advises drivers to go slowly; if you see a deer, more may well be coming. And don't just rush off once the deer is gone; proceed with caution, because deer often double back.
Sangamon County had 394 incidents;
Peoria, had 340.
Rock Island, 290.
Jackson County 288.
Will, Kane, Fulton, and Lake are also on the top ten counties for motor-vehicle deer collisions.
