The rejection of Illinois' massive pension law continues to have other legal repercussions. The state Supreme Court found that the law reducing teachers and state and university employees' retirement benefits is unconstitutional.
A union representing Chicago Park District says that's proof a law affecting its members is too. Adam Rosen is a spokesman for SEIU.
"When the Supreme Court unanimously rules that pension benefits cannot be diminished nor impaired, it sets a pretty good standard, we believe, and it and should go right into this with the park district, that: alright, you can't change it."
Rosen says the park district waited to file its lawsuit on the 2014 law until it saw how other pension cases fared. But the Illinois Supreme Court is set to hear yet another case this fall, on a law cutting city of Chicago employees' pensions.
Advocates of the various pension proposals say they're needed to prevent the funds from going insolvent.
