U of Illinois emails highlight medical school struggle

The process to win approval for a new medical school at the University of Illinois' flagship campus was long and involved serious political maneuvering. Much of that wheeling and dealing took place in emails written by then-Chancellor Phyllis Wise in private email accounts.  Those emails contributed to Wise's resignation as the top official at the Urbana Champaign campus last month. They have since been released by the university and offer a look at the push to create the medical school. Wise faced opposition from then-chairman of the university trustees, Christopher Kennedy and the Chicago campus. And Kennedy warned her that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel was opposed, too. But the election last fall of Bruce Rauner changed the course of the medical school. Trustees approved it in March.
