House wants motor-fuel tax money to go to local governments

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois House is considering legislation to free up millions of dollars in fuel-tax revenue owed to local governments. Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie of Chicago introduced the measure Tuesday. It authorizes releasing $146 million in motor fuel taxes to counties, cities and road districts for costs through Sept. 30.  Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration had not distributed the local portion of the 19-cents-a-gallon tax on fuel since July first because the Republican governor and legislative Democrats haven't agreed on a budget. An Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman says the state has collected $57 million in motor fuel taxes since July 1. Other motor-fuel tax money is going to state road and construction funds because of separate appropriation authority.
