Bridge lighting draws hundreds to Quincy celebration

A major bridge over the Mississippi River at Quincy now has colorful lighting that can be changed to mark special events.

Hundreds of people turned out Saturday night to celebrate the first lighting of the Bayview Bridge.

Quincy Mayor Kyle Moore says there are 16 color options and just a few were displayed at the celebration.

A federal transportation grant and local contributions covered the costs of the project. City boosters hope the bridge lights will attract visitors and help commemorate the city's 175th anniversary being celebrated this year.

The project originally was proposed in the early 1990s by Joe Bonansinga, a civic leader known as "Mr. Quincy."
