Eastern Illinois University readying for layoffs

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - Eastern Illinois University plans an unspecified number of layoffs on campus this week as the school tries to make financial plans for the school year. The university said in a news release Monday that layoff notices are being delivered between Monday and Wednesday. But a spokesman said the university isn't saying yet how many people would lose jobs. The university is trying to plan for the school year without knowing how much money it will receive from the state in the face of the budgetary stalemate. Rauner earlier this year proposed steep cuts for higher education. The EIU issued statement also says more layoffs are possible as the school year goes on.
