U of Illinois trustees consider Wise's exit, replacement

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A committee of University of Illinois trustees is expected to meet Wednesday to decide whether to accept the resignation of Phyllis Wise and an agreement that would pay her a $400,000 bonus. The committee is also expected to name an interim replacement for Wise at the Urbana-Champaign campus while the search for a permanent chancellor begins. Wise said last week she would resign effective Wednesday amid allegations of athlete mistreatment and a lawsuit over the decision to rescind a professor's job offer. Then on Friday, the university said Wise and other administrators used private email accounts to discuss key matters and avoid public scrutiny. Wise steps down after four years and is due to get four-fifths of the $500,000 retention bonus her contract calls for if she stayed five years.
