Construction is about to begin on the first station of a planned high-speed rail line between Chicago and St. Louis. Officials will break ground Tuesday on the $3.26 million station in Dwight. The small town is about 70 miles southwest of Chicago.
The line for the passenger train will eventually see new stations built in other towns along the way. They include Pontiac, Normal, Lincoln, Springfield, Carlinville and Alton. The trains will be able to top 100 mph under the largely federally funded project. That will reduce travel times between Chicago and St. Louis to less than four hours.
