(AP) - A donation may have bought more time for the penny parking meters in Sycamore. Sycamore city officials will go to Joliet in about two weeks to pick up nearly 600 donated coin-operated parking meters. The Joliet City Council approved a motion declaring the meters surplus property. Joliet uses battery-operated digital meters.
Sycamore parking enforcement officer Giovanni Serra says the donation means there will now be enough salvaged parts to keep the city's penny parking meters working for the next few years. Serra says Sycamore wants to be nostalgic and keep the meters. The city is one of the few places in the country where penny parking meters are still used. Sycamore has about 300 meters. A penny buys 12 minutes.
