Illinois will hold a rare, special election primary contest Tuesday. Voters in the 18th Congressional district will narrow the field of candidates vying to replace Peoria Republican Aaron Schock. The special election was triggered when an ethical scandal led Schock to resign in March.
Three Republicans are in the running. State Senator Darin LaHood, conservative blogger Michael Flynn, and Donald Rients who works for State Farm insurance. The Democratic contest is between Adam Lopez, who is on the Springfield school board, and high school teacher Rob Mellon.
Early voting for the primary began at the end of May. Turnout has reportedly been low throughout the large district ... which branches into 19 counties.
The general election is September 10th.
