SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois lawmakers have approved a pilot program that would place locking devices on some pharmacy painkiller prescriptions. Legislators in both chambers supported the measure, including a 107-0 House vote in support during a Tuesday overtime session. The bill now goes to Gov. Bruce Rauner for his signature. State Rep. Mike Zalewski is a sponsor. The Democrat says a more aggressive approach is needed to fight addiction and substance abuse. The legislation calls for a one-year program run by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and participating pharmacies. Numerical locking devices resembling those used on gym lockers would be put on prescription bottles. Rauner's spokeswoman says the governor carefully reviews any legislation sent to him. If signed, the bill would take effect in 2016.
