Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago plans to close four facilities next month because of "uncertainty" over state and city funding. Two are family shelters and two are child development centers. Catholic Charities spokeswoman Kristine Kappel says officials reviewed 155 programs and locations and found it wasn't "fiscally responsible" to operate at the four locations. Catholic Charities bills itself as one of the largest private, nonprofit social service agencies in the Midwest and serves more than 1 million people each year. There are about 160 locations in Cook and Lake counties alone, which Kappel says will still serve many area families. Kappel says corporate and individual donations are also down recently, which was a contributing factor.
