CHICAGO (AP) - The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago says it's shuttering a church that has towered over one neighborhood on the city's west side for more than 100 years.
A Sunday statement from the archdiocese says closing St. Adalbert Church in Pilsen is part of far-reaching plans to reorder parishes amid lower Mass attendance and a decline in numbers of priests.
The church's 185-foot twin towers suffered structural damage over the decades. And the archdiocese suggests the costs of restoration work on the church overall would be prohibitive.
The St. Adalbert Church website says it was founded as a Polish parish. It says many of its members now are Hispanic.
Builders modeled its design after St. Paul's Basilica in Rome. It also features a large pipe organ that's also fallen into disrepair.
