State can’t rely on private donations to fill budget gap

A group representing Illinois philanthropists says foundations shouldn’t be expected to help fill the state’s 6-billion dollar budget gap.

Lawmakers and Governor Bruce Rauner continue to negotiate next year’s budget, which could cut social service programs.

Delia Coleman is with Donors Forum , a group that represents foundations and philanthropists.

“We’ve heard it at federal levels, at local levels, this misconception that philanthropy is so large that it can step in to address gaps in public funding.”

Some of the foundations represented by Donors Forum support several non-profits around Illinois.
