Truckers say Will County overuses overweight ticketing

The Midwest Truckers Association says a road in Will County has become a ticket trap for semi-truck drivers.

Matt Wells of the truckers group says the county's excessive enforcement has pummeled drivers with tickets for exceeding a weight limit. He claims penalties total more than $2.5 million and he's written to the Illinois Department of Transportation about it.

Wells says Manhattan-Monee Road from U.S. Route 52 to U.S. 45 is an important east-west route for truckers. It takes them over a culvert with a 15-ton weight limit.

Will County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer says that traffic sergeants patrol the area because of safety concerns. Hoffmeyer says the weight limit is well marked with signs.

An IDOT spokeswoman says the agency is looking into it.
