Quincy to overhaul its water plant

The western Illinois city of Quincy plans the first major overhaul of its water treatment plant since the 1950s. Aldermen on Monday are set to approve $3.1 million in work at the plant. About 500-thousand dollars in additional upgrades already have been approved. The funding comes from user fees. Quincy's director of utilities and engineering says the last major overhaul was in 1957. The plant dates to the 1900s. They'll use the money to replace pumps, tanks and other infrastructure. They'll also add a computerized system to automate how chemicals are added to the water, intending to give the city better water quality. The plant treats an average 8 million gallons of water daily.
