Elgin schools considering more testing for Legionella

School officials in Elgin say they're considering a more intense schedule to test for Legionella, after three schools were shut when the bacteria was found last year.

School District U-46's water treatment company recommends quarterly testing of its cooling towers for Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease.

School officials say they're considering even more stringent testing, but no timeline is set.

Two schools in Elgin, one in Bartlett and an administration center were closed in September for three business days after higher-than-normal levels of the bacteria were found in cooling towers. About 3,000 students were evacuated.
