University of Illinois president to step down month early

University of Illinois officials say President Robert Easter will step down about a month early.

Board of Trustees Chairman Ed McMillan says that Easter will formally step down on May 17 after the last spring commencement. Easter originally said he would step down on June 30.

The school hired Timothy Killeen as Easter's replacement in November. Killeen will take over May 18. He hopes to quickly launch a new strategic planning process for the university.  Easter says he thinks the university is "at a transformational moment."
