Lawmakers want hearings on college severance packages

Democratic lawmakers are asking Illinois' colleges and universities for more information about administrators' contracts and benefits following a $762,000 buyout package that College of DuPage trustees approved for the school's president.
Letters requesting details were sent to institutions this week. Democratic senators said Wednesday that they plan to form a bipartisan committee that'll hear testimony within weeks. Legislation to beef up oversight and regulations is also in the works.
The move comes days after Republican lawmakers announced bills on the same issue, including legislation capping the size of severance payouts and making them subject to Illinois' open records law.
College of DuPage trustees voted last month to give President Robert Breuder nearly three times his base salary when he retires in March 2016 - three years before his contract expires.
