Changes are being unveiled for a plan to give a boost to the state’s poorer school districts.
Democratic Senator Andy Manar from Macoupin County says the new version would take funds away from wealthier school districts to give more aid to those with low property values. But he also wants to make allowances for cost of living across the state and for high property taxes.
Manar says he realizes he faces an uphill battle to get the plan approved.
"Acknowledging that we have a severe problem to solve to me is a tremendous step forward for the state. So I feel like we're inching forward toward a solution."
Manar’s effort passed the Senate last year, but stalled in the Illinois House.
His plan also asks for another half billion dollars for schools at a time the state is facing a growing budget deficit.
