Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has reaffirmed his support for charter schools, but stopped short of announcing new policy. Today, Rauner attended a charter school ground breaking on Chicago’s West Side.
"I’m very honored to be here, I look forward to working together to have this school become a reality and many more schools just like it around Chicago, around Illinois become a reality too.”
Illinois has limits to how many charters can operate around the state. Rauner has said that he wants to eliminate the cap and implement a school voucher program.
It would give lower income families public funds to send their kids to private school. The governor is expected to detail these and other education initiatives during his State of the State speech next week.
