Thousands of Illinois voters have already cast their ballots for November's election. There have been a couple bumps in the road this first week of voting.
There's a report out of suburban Cook County, in which a candidate for the Illinois House tried to vote for himself, only for the screen to show he'd voted for his opponent.
It appears to have been a calibration problem with the voting machine; an issue elections officials say is resolvable, and was, eventually allowing the candidate to cast a ballot in his own favor. Still, a word to the wise voter, from Director of the Illinois State Board of Elections, Rupert Borgsmiller:
"It's like anything else. You just need to be vigilant when you cast your ballot.”
Borgsmiller says the state is in the midst of running pre-election tests to ensure accuracy. Though it's local officials, usually county clerks, actually run elections.
Other issues so far included printing errors for a local race in Rockford; and complaints from the Republican Party about observers' ability to view absentee ballot counting in Rock Island.
