More than 900 people have already cast their vote in-person Peoria County’s 2025 Consolidated Primary Election, with almost 6,000 additional votes already returned by mail.
That number comes from Peoria County Election Commission Executive Director Elizabeth Gannon. Gannon says early voting continues the next three days, leading up to Primary Election Day on Tuesday.
“Voting for the Consolidated [General] Election will start once the primary has been certified, sometime between March 13 and March 17,” Gannon said in an email to WCBU.
Sample ballots are online, as well as a full list of early voting locations.
The Peoria County primary’s nonpartisan ballot includes three races to narrow down the candidates for city positions. The primary for Peoria Mayor includes current mayor Rita Ali, District 2 councilmember Chuck Grayeb and at-large councilmember John Kelly.
Ali, Grayeb and Kelly have staked out their positions and traded criticisms over the past few weeks through debates and mailers. They’ve covered crime, homelessness, economic growth, DEI and the city’s pension payments, among other topics. Another broadcast debate between the two remaining candidates in the general is set for March 19.
Another primary on the nonpartisan ballot is the race to fill the District 2 seat vacated by Grayeb. The three person field of Krista Wresinski, Alex Carmona and Estrella Diaz will also be narrowed down to two candidates. WCBU spoke with all three late last year to hear their positions on homelessness, downtown revitalization efforts and other prominent Peoria issues.
The primary ballot also includes a final three candidate race for city treasurer. Former chief financial officer for the Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity Action Agency Asya Washum, Peoria County Clerk Chief Deputy Brooke Petty Sommerville and former city council member Jim Montelongo are on the ballot.
Republican ballots will also include a race between Terry Grawey and Andrew Couri for Peoria Township Assessor. Township Assessor is a partisan position so, because there is no Democratic challenger, that race will be decided by the Primary.
The 2025 General Consolidated Election Day is April 1.
