Conservative Catholic Bishops are trying to distance themselves from an apparent softening of the church’s attitude on certain social issues. Bishops are meeting in Rome this week to discuss family life.

A paper detailing the discussion thus far asks the church to be more welcoming to gay people and divorcees. But, many Bishops have come out against the papers, and organizers say it’s a working document.

Dennis Coday is the editor of the National Catholic Reporter. He says nothing has officially changed...

"But I really see it as a toothpaste out of the tube moment. I mean you’re not going to get it back in. People know this is the reality, and people know this is being talked about at the highest levels," said Coday.

Coday says the change isn’t coming from Rome, but rather from Bishops listening to their parishioners.

Pope Francis has not commented on the paper, but he has been at the meetings
