Getting a traffic ticket would cost you a few extra dollars under legislation before the Illinois General Assembly. A pair of state legislators want to increase by $6 the penalty you pay for a traffic citation, or nearly any other offense, with some of that extra money going to help for police cameras.
It's a concept groups like the NAACP have backed for years, but that's gaining steam in the wake of the shooting in Ferguson, Missouri.
Director of the Police Training Institute, Mike Schlosser says law enforcement is one of the most noble, and honorable professions in the country, he says officers risk their lives for strangers every day.
"However many times officers get falsely accused of abuse of authority and use of excessive force."
He says it can work the other way too; "bad apples" who do use excessive force deserve to be punished.
Schlosser says cameras in squad cars and worn on the body will help the good guys, and make sure the bad ones are held accountable. And, he says, it protects regular citizens those officers are sworn to protect.
