The candidates for governor are disputing how Illinois should pay for basic services like education. The two candidates have drastically different views on how to pay for government.
Republican venture capitalist Bruce Rauner says the income tax rate should be lowered. And he wants to create new taxes on services like printing and call centers and storage.
"I would put education as a top priority. It would be sacrosanct. The cuts can come at other places. Education is not where things should be cut."
Rauner says his Democratic rival’s budgeting has caused the state to go into meltdown mode.
Meantime, Governor Pat Quinn says people should pay taxes based on their ability to pay, and wants to keep a higher income tax rate.
"This crowd that has more money than King Midas wanted to shift more of the tax burden onto everyday people. We can’t have that in Illinois. This campaign, this election is about fairness."
Quinn says Rauner’s tax plans would lose the state money, and would force the very cuts to education that Rauner has sworn off.
