New fees at SIU to fund athletics and student newspaper

Two student fees at SIU Carbondale will be added to bills, after all.  University Trustees last month voted to table a proposed increase in the athletic fee, as well as a new fee to support the Daily Egyptian student newspaper.

At a meeting Tuesday in Edwardsville, Trustees approved both fees, saying they’d had enough time to further investigate them and move forward.
Trustee Donna Manering says they wanted to take a careful approach to these proposals, in an effort to keep education costs down.

“We have some concern about fees, generally. So we would like to ask that President Dunn take some time to review all fees, and bring back to the Board an understanding of the fees.”

Each fee totals nine dollars per semester. The “Student Media Fee” will help support the Daily Egyptian, which has seen a decline in revenues and increase in costs. Advocates for the paper formed focus groups to work on a new business plan for the future as a part of the fee process.

Meanwhile Athletic Director Mario Moccia says SIU Carbondale is still near the bottom of the list when it comes to university support for athletics, and the fee will help support athletes and their activities.
