State Republican Party chair cancels major fundraiser
The controversial head of Illinois’ Republican Party is cancelling a major fundraiser set for next month. Chairman Pat Brady is under fire for publicly supporting same-sex marriage. IPR’s Alex Keefe reports:
State GOP bosses are holding a special meeting March Ninth - which could result in Brady’s ouster.
That’s just ten days before a big fundraiser that was supposed to include the head of the national party.
Brady says he cancelled the event because the internal flap over same-sex marriage would be an embarrassment.
BRADY: They can do whatever they wanna do with me. But all this they’re doing right now is doing nothing but…hurting the Republican Party and our chances of winning in 2014.
In January, Brady announced his - quote - “full support” for same-sex marriage - contrary to party policy.
But State Central Committeeman Eugene Dawson says he didn’t even give party bosses a heads’ up.
DAWSON: I’m not gonna condemn the man before he has the opportunity to explain himself thoroughly.
It’s still unclear whether Brady’s opponents have enough votes to get rid of him.
