Eden Alternative
- Some 1.5 million elderly Americans live in nursing homes, where they receive medical and custodial care but are often denied the warmth and personal contact associated with a real home. Thomas Lalley of member station WAMC in Albany reports on a new kind of elderly care in New York state that could revolutionize the country's nursing homes.
Jordan & Israel
- Jackie speaks with Jordanian Information Minister Marwan Mu'asher about the current tensions between Jordan and Israel. Jordan, which has a peace treaty with Israel, was the only Arab country to welcome the election of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last May. But Mu'asher says Netanyahu's performance since then has caused deep concerns in Jordan about the future of the Middle East peace process.
Truthsquading Medicare
A number of questions asked by participants in last night's debate were about what the presidential candidates intend to do about health care and Medicare. The answers they both gave were pretty much what they've been saying for the last two years. Voters are likely to remain confused and worried, though not necessarily scared, since the candidates answers will no doubt remain vague until after the election. NPR's Joanne Silberner truth-squads politics and health care issues.
Ccri Update
NPR'S Richard Gonzales reports on the fizzling fate of the California Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI), which would ban state affirmative action programs. And the number of voters who are undecided on the issue has grown.

Cheryl Corley Reports
that, so far, 28 states have submitted their welfare reform plans. The deadline is July 1st in order to take advantage of a new funding mechanism which will allow them to receive more money from the federal government. Other states in other circumstances have no incentive to file their plans early.
Tom Gjelten Reports African Leaders Are Meeting In Kenya
to try to agree on a formula to end the refugee crisis in eastern Zaire.
Consent Rules
NPR's Richard Harris reports that the FDA will now allow experimental procedures to be used in life-threatening situations where neither the individual nor a member of the family is able to give informed consent. Communities and hospitals will set the standards for when such decisions will be made. It may promote advances in emergency care, but experts say monitoring for abuse is crucial.
