Rauner argues in favor of term limits after Obama's remarks in Africa

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner wants term limits for Illinois legislators - and he’s citing the president to make his case.

When President Barack Obama recently went to Africa - he said he thinks he could win a third term. But he can’t.

"The point is, I don’t understand why some people want me to stay so long," Obama said.

Governor Rauner used those comments to argue for term limits for Illinois lawmakers.

"You should have term limits in Africa to help you deal with your corruption and end your corruption," Rauner said. "Think about that statement, and think about what’s gone on in the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago and Springfield for years."

A spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan, who’s been in office for 44 years, says term limits don’t prevent misconduct.

Madigan’s spokesman pointed to the Missouri House Speaker, who recently resigned after sending sexually suggestive text messages to an intern.
