A federal judge has approved a consent decree to close the E.D. Edwards power plant by the end of 2022.
The consent decree approved Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Joe Billy McDade would take the coal-burning power plant south of Peoria offline to settle a lawsuit filed by several environmental groups in 2013 over various violations of air quality standards.
The decree also requires Illinois Power Resources Generating to pay $8.6 million for job retraining programs and public health programs in the Peoria area.
The deal is subject to regulatory approval from MISO.
