Bustos Endorses Trump Investigation, But Not Impeachment Inquiry

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline) said she supports uncovering the truth behind President Donald Trump’s phone call with the Ukranian president, but stopped short of supporting a formal impeachment inquiry.

The president allegedly withheld $400 million in military aid while pressing Ukraine to open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, a key political rival.

The Trump administration is refusing to allow Congress to see a whistleblower complaint believed to be linked to the call. In a statement, Bustos says withholding that complaint is a “clear violation of law and order,” and called on the House Intelligence Committee and leadership to find the facts.

Bustos and Representative Dan Lipinski are the only members of the Illinois Democratic congressional delegation not to endorse impeachment. More than 160 House Democrats now say they support opening an impeachment inquiry.

Bustos' 17th Congressional District stretches from Peoria and Pekin to the Quad Cities and Rockford. The district was drawn to lean Democratic, but voted from Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections.

U.S. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) called for Trump’s impeachment in a floor speech Tuesday. He said he believes an impeachment inquiry is the only way to find out the truth behind the Ukraine phone call.
